One of the most magical times in the Christmas Holiday is the lighting of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center. The location is perfect; it is placed right in front of the skating rink in the Center. Every year a huge tree is brought from some place in the country and is ready to lit with a great amount of fan fare.
The tree lighting is done in December of every year since 1937. The ceremony is broadcast on national TV every year. There are famous singers as well as local school choirs. There are celebrities that show up to sing and to celebrate the Christmas holiday.
The Tree is worked on by hundreds of workers string thousands of lights. Each strand has to be tested and the officials of the Center have to make sure the electrical works and the lights are maintained properly before the tree goes up.
Once the tree is lit up it is an amazing sight. People from all over the country as well as the world comes to New York City to see the biggest Christmas tree before and after it is lit. It is a great time for the City.
Once the holiday is over and the tree is taken down, it is then converted to mulch and the biggest parts of the tree itself is donated to the United States Equestrian Team for jumping practice.
